The Conservation Projects Director is a senior-level team member responsible for leading and managing The Wildlands Conservancy’s conservation land acquisition program throughout California and the Western United States. Working under the direction of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the executive team, this position manages complex acquisition projects from initial evaluation through closing, coordinating due diligence, negotiations, funding, legal review, and cross-functional project execution to advance the organization’s strategic conservation priorities. This position also collaborates with executive leadership and regional staff to support habitat restoration, species rewilding, land stewardship planning, and long-term land management across the preserve system.
The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience managing complex transactions, strong project management and negotiation skills, strong grant-writing capabilities, and a working knowledge of the natural history and conservation landscapes of the western United States.
This position will be working with TWC leadership to oversee our conservation, restoration and public access work in the Eastern Sierra Region, and directly overseeing our Two Rivers Preserve, a spectacular 2,483 acres at Sonora Junction in Mono County, and our West Walker River Preserve is 89 acres of riverfront lands by Coleville, CA that is anticipated to grow by an additional 1300 acres. This is a hybrid position with remote work and frequent travel to the properties within the Eastern Sierra Nevada Region.

Conduct outdoor education field trip programs, teaching youth in multiple grade levels while providing a safe and interactive learning experience for school groups. Responsible for leading interpretive programs and other weekend activities for visitors, including both children and adults. Also, engage visitors on trails and at the Administrative Center, from welcoming guests and providing Preserve information to checking in campers. Requires regular weekday and weekend availability as well as some late shifts. Weekly hours range from 18-28 per week, with reduced scheduled hours during school breaks. Bilingual (English and Spanish) highly desired.

The Preserve Manager assists the Regional Director with the overall management of the Beaver Valley Headwaters Preserve, a 6,000-acre (and growing) preserve protecting the headwaters of the East Fork Scott River, one of Northern California’s most ecologically significant watersheds and a critical landscape for the recovery of native salmon and steelhead.
Unique opportunity to reside at the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve, a 25,000-acre nature preserve located 10 miles northwest of Yucca Valley, CA. The position entails performing land stewardship, public contact, maintenance, and habitat restoration. A love of the outdoors, a basic knowledge of ecology, enjoyment of people, and the ability to hike up to three miles are necessary. The Preserve Steward will be responsible for maintaining positive, professional relationships with local residents, community and conservation groups, and educational and business entities, while promoting the dual mission of TWC. The work is primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, and requires regular and punctual attendance, including weekend work.
