TEMPORARY RANGER

The Temporary Ranger assists in establishing an on-site presence at the Bluff Lake Reserve from May through November (weather permitting). Successful candidate is comfortable working in an isolated outdoor setting with possible wildlife encounters, passionate about The Wildlands Conservancy’s mission, and has the capability to stay in company-provided camping trailer overnight during scheduled days. The Temporary Ranger primarily interacts with visitors and promotes access and safety awareness and protects the land and its resources. Position will require weekend work. Weekly hours range from 24-32 per week.

RUTH BORUN BOTANIC GARDEN FELLOWSHIP

The fellow will work alongside passionate botanists and conservationists, engaging in a variety of hands-on activities that contribute to the garden’s mission of research, education, habitat restoration, and connecting people with nature. During the six-month temporary position, the fellow will assist in maintaining the garden’s extensive collection of plants native to the species-rich San Bernardino Mountains, honing their skills in plant care, propagation, and cultivation techniques. They may also participate in research projects involving restoration ecology, rare and endangered species, or monitoring the impact of climate change on ecosystems.

Additionally, they will have the opportunity to engage with visitors, providing information about the garden's flora and fostering an appreciation for the unique plants that thrive in this diverse ecoregion.

This full-time temporary position is available from June through November 2024. Primarily an outdoor position working in all weather conditions; requires regular and punctual attendance.

NATURALIST

Conduct outdoor education programs teaching children in multiple grade levels environmental, science-based, and cultural programs. Topics include forest ecology and ecosystems, watersheds, geology, animal adaptations, wildlife habitats, early inhabitants of the area and activities relating to the enjoyment of nature’s beauty. Responsible for providing a safe and interactive learning experience to school and youth groups, and activities and interpretive programs for families and public visitors.

Additional responsibilities include working on the Preserve, greeting visitors and performing public contact. Requires weekend work. Weekly hours range from 18-24 per week, with reduced or no scheduled hours during school and program breaks. Bilingual (English and Spanish) is highly desired.

The Preserve Manager assists the Regional Director with the overall management and internal processes needed to manage the Eel River Canyon Preserve and secondarily other locations within the region. Primary tasks include directing the work of staff, consultants/contractors, volunteers, and docents on the Preserve. Additionally, assists in ensuring compliance requirements are met and takes the lead on special projects as assigned by the Regional Director.

Applicants will play a crucial initial role in oversight and assistance in the renovation of the historic Dean Witter housing complex.

Performs public contact, conservation advocacy, and outreach. Actively represents and promotes Wildland's mission and interests through involvement with visitors, residents and community groups, governmental and business entities in the Eel River Canyon region. Responsible for assisting in the management of shaded fuel break and restoration forestry projects, riparian enhancements, and rangeland management. Plans and coordinates stewardship and habitat restoration activities.

The work involves the routine exercise of discretion and includes advising management, planning, and negotiation, including contributing to Wildlands management policies and improving general operations. Being proactive, organized, communicative, and taking personal accountability for the projects assigned are essential for the success of this position.
