Oak Glen Preserve’s Rich History and Relationship with Los Rios Rancho

Nestled in the scenic foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, The Wildlands Conservancy's Oak Glen Preserve offers visitors a glimpse into California’s natural beauty while also preserving a storied past that intertwines with one of the region’s oldest family farms: Los Rios Rancho.

The Origins of Oak Glen Preserve

The Oak Glen Preserve began as part of The Wildlands Conservancy’s mission to protect and restore California’s most treasured landscapes. Now spanning 820-acres, the Preserve was established to conserve Oak Glen’s unique blend of diverse ecosystems—from lush woodlands to rolling grasslands, riparian areas, and chaparral-covered hillsides. The Preserve serves as a sanctuary for wildlife, with its meadows, ponds, and oak groves providing essential habitat for species like bobcats, mule deer, and various bird species.

The significance of Oak Glen extends beyond nature conservation. The region has long been a hub for apple farming, a legacy that Wildlands sought to preserve by integrating the neighboring Riley family to maintain the Los Rios Rancho apple farm and operate the restaurant and gift shop.

The Relationship with Los Rios Rancho

Los Rios Rancho, established in 1906, is one of Oak Glen’s most iconic and historic apple orchards. It is more than just a family farm; it represents a living connection to the region’s agricultural heritage. In 1996, Wildlands recognized the importance of preserving this historical site from development. When the southern half of Los Rios Rancho was at risk of being sold for residential development, with plans for approximately 300 houses, Wildlands stepped in to acquire and protect the land. By 1999, Wildlands expanded its conservation efforts by purchasing the northern half of the ranch as well.

Today, Los Rios Rancho is managed by the Riley family, who lease the orchards from Wildlands and continue to run the packing shed, cider press, store, and restaurant. This arrangement ensures that the apple ranch remains a vibrant, working farm while also supporting Wildlands conservation goals. The Riley family’s dedication helps preserve the ranch’s rich apple-growing tradition and offers visitors a chance to enjoy fresh apple cider, homemade pies, and the timeless experience of apple picking.

A Legacy of Conservation and Community

The partnership between Wildlands and Los Rios Rancho exemplifies a successful blend of environmental stewardship and cultural heritage. Wildlands’ acquisition of Los Rios Rancho not only saved it from development but also ensured that its agricultural traditions could continue. The collaboration creates a unique destination where visitors can explore Oak Glen’s natural beauty, hike scenic trails, and engage in outdoor education programs.

Wildlands maintains the trails and picnic areas throughout the Preserve and hosts free outdoor education classes for schools from the Inland Empire and beyond. These programs provide children with hands-on learning experiences, fostering a connection to nature and a deeper understanding of conservation.

The enduring relationship between Wildlands and Los Rios Rancho showcases how thoughtful conservation can preserve both natural landscapes and cultural traditions. By maintaining this balance, Oak Glen Preserve continues to offer a rich tapestry of experiences that celebrate California’s natural and agricultural heritage.
