TWO RIVERS PRESERVE

Two Rivers Preserve is an awe-inspiring landscape within an ancient volcanic caldera full of glacial moraines, river-carved canyons, mountain meadows, and grand vistas of the Sierra Nevada and Sweetwater Mountains. The 2,483-acre nature preserve is blessed with 9 miles of rivers and streams including the trout-laden Little Walker River and West Walker River. The preserve protects sagebrush steppe, wetland meadow, riparian, aspen, and mixed conifer forests that support a variety of wildlife including bi-state sage grouse, rocky mountain mule deer, black bear, bald eagles, trout, red fox, mountain lion, and more.

The preserve is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fishing.  The most popular area of the preserve is the Kirman Lake Trail which starts off Highway 108. This moderate, 3-mile trail is a gateway into the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest providing access to Kirman Lake, Mud Lake, Poore Lake, Pickel Meadow and Leavitt Meadows. Additionally, the mouth of Walker Canyon at the confluence of the West Walker and Little Walker Rivers is a popular spot on Highway 395 for travelers looking to stretch their legs and fish anglers looking to catch some fish.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Pack it in, Pack it out.

Take any trash you make with you.

Leave What You Find.

Allow others a sense of discovery by leaving rocks, plants, archaeological artifacts and other objects of interest as you find them.

Respect Wildlife.

Learn about wildlife through quiet observation. Do not disturb wildlife or plants just for a “better look.” Observe wildlife from a distance so they are not scared or forced to flee.

Be Considerate of Others.

One of the most important components of outdoor ethics is to maintain courtesy toward other visitors. It helps everyone enjoy their outdoor experience.

CONSERVATION OUTCOMES

In 2015, The Wildlands Conservancy acquired the original 150-acre Two Rivers Preserve at the confluence of the West Walker and Little Walker Rivers to protect the property from being subdivided for several trophy vacation homes.  Additionally, the appurtenant annual water rights to divert 40 acre-feet of water from the Walker River for agricultural uses will be left in the river for the benefit of the threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout.

The preserve expanded to 2,483 acres with the acquisition of the Bently Junction Ranch in August, 2023, with the assistance of grant funds provided by the California Wildlife Conservation Board. The expansion provides the opportunity for The Wildlands Conservancy and its partners to focus on a vast assortment of conservation projects including wetland meadow restoration, protecting mule deer migration corridors, sage grouse habitat restoration, population recovery for Lahontan cutthroat trout, improve instream flows to benefit the Walker River Basin, and more.
