Eel River Estuary & Sounding Seas Dunes
Along the coast, endless dunes and solitary beaches support the federally endangered snowy plover and other shorebirds, while offering a rare glimpse of California’s wild coastline much as it once appeared to explorers and Indigenous peoples.
Together, these preserves protect one of the most dynamic and ecologically rich estuarine systems on the West Coast, while also illustrating the growing impacts of sea level rise and coastal erosion on vulnerable coastal habitats.
