The Wildlands Conservancy’s Nature's Niños Family Campout Program

Empowering Youth and Families in the Great Outdoors

Nature's Niños is a free, all-included camping program designed to provide enriching outdoor experiences for families from Latinx communities in the Coachella Valley. For many in our communities, access to safe outdoor spaces and camping equipment can be limited. Through this program we aim to break down barriers and open doors to unforgettable outdoor adventures. At the heart of Nature's Niños lies a commitment to introducing families to the joys of camping while fostering a deeper connection with nature.

The Wildlands Conservancy’s Nature's Niños program was first launched by Wind Wolves Preserve in Kern County in the Fall of 2017, and in 2022 was adapted by the Whitewater Preserve to serve families in the Coachella Valley. Our program isn't just about camping — it's about empowerment and education. By engaging with naturalists, rangers, and docents from The Wildlands Conservancy, children have the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on activities that enhance their understanding of ecology and environmental stewardship. We believe that these formative experiences serve as the cornerstone for nurturing the next generation of community leaders, stewards, and STEAM professionals.

The continued success and expansion of Whitewater Preserve's Nature's Niños program into its second year is made possible by generous funding from The Dean Witter Foundation, in addition to unwavering support from The Council of Mexico Federation of North America (COFEM). Planning and preparation for Nature's Niños spring program is currently underway and we are grateful to be furthering our mission in the Coachella Valley by providing free programs so that children may have the opportunity to behold the beauty, joy and wonder of nature!
