WILDFIRE SAFETY

Fire damage on western side of Preserve (summer 2020)

As wildfires devastate natural areas and communities across our state, Wind Wolves Preserve strives to minimize the possibility of a blaze on our 93,000 acres and mitigate damage should flames ignite.

For example, throughout the fire season, staff protect our buildings with fire breaks, strips of barren land that reduce the fuels available to a fire, and they maintain road conditions, trimming tall grasses that could ignite from the heat generated by vehicles. Additionally, each summer our staff inventory fire suppression supplies and train on their proper use to act quickly and safely for small-scale blazes. Wind Wolves Preserve also relies on the aid of our visitors to safeguard our lands.

Most wildfires in the United States are started by human activities, with various sources including powerlines, electrical equipment, vehicles, lawn tools, campfires, and cigarettes. Consequently, we ask guests to not smoke, use propane grills (no charcoal), park only in designated lots (the catalytic converter under your vehicle can ignite dry grass), and heed seasonal fire bans. Thank you for helping keep Wind Wolves Preserve safe for everyone!
