SUMMARY:Volunteer Day: Backcountry Bakersfield Cactus Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Join Wind Wolves Staff as we collect data and monitor the growth and health of our growing endangered Bakersfield cactus populations at the Preserve. Recommended for ages 16 and up. Reservations are required. Space is limited. This program is funded by the Outdoor Equity Grants Program\, created through AB 209 and administered by California State Parks\, Office of Grants and Local Services. \n\nDETAILS \n\nCheck in at the Administrative Center at 7:45 am \nAll participants will be required to sign a waiver upon arrival. Minors must have a legal parent/guardian present to attend.\nReliable transportation required. Volunteers drive themselves to the monitoring site\, which is located 20-30 minutes one way from the Administrative Center\, beyond locked gates. No restroom facilities will be available at the monitoring site. NO LATE ARRIVALS OR DEPARTURES. \n\nPlease note this event is subject to cancellation due to excessive heat warnings or other hazardous conditions. \nSUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING \n\nweather appropriate clothing (check the weather)\nlong pants (protect yourself from ticks)\nclose-toe shoes (ankle length hiking boots recommended)\nGaiters (protect yourself from foxtails & other dry grasses)\nsun protection (hat\, sunscreen\, sunglasses)\ngardening gloves (limited supply available)\nwater/electrolytes\nsnacks\n\nSAFETY \n\n Remember to bring enough water and snacks for each person and pet in your group (it is recommended you bring 1 liter for every 2 hours of hiking/ person).\nWater bottle refill stations are located at The Crossing and The Willows restroom (depending on your program\, you may encounter 1 or both of these restrooms).\nAccess to shade will be available (depending on trail/ program) and short breaks will be provided.\nRecognize the symptoms of heat illness in yourself and others.\n\n  \n  \nCall Wind Wolves Preserve at (661) 858-1115 or email windwolvespreserve@wildlandsconservancy.org for questions and more information.
