When the Santa Ana River Trail was envisioned in 1915, no one could have imagined that it would take nearly 100 years to complete. The constant encroachment by urban growth and development since that time has diminished the breadth and flow of the river, but it has not extinguished the vision of a trail stretching from the mountains to the Pacific. Through time, countless dedicated groups and individuals have advanced the river trail. The Wildlands Conservancy’s staff and financial contributions sparked a Santa Ana River renaissance that has enlarged the tri-county trail concept into a tri-county natural lands parkway project.

The Santa Ana River passes through the urban core of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Via the bike, path national forest, state parks, county parks and the Pacific Ocean will become readily accessible to urban residents and will bring the beauty of nature into the lives of children. The tens of millions of dollars TWC has spent in the watershed on habitat acquisition, visitor facilities, youth programs, and trail planning and construction have fostered a strong partnership with the counties and municipalities. In 2006, the cities and counties formed the Santa Ana River Trail and Parkway Policy Advisory Committee with TWC as a voting member.

Working together, the Policy Advisory Committee was able to earmark $45 million for the Santa Ana River Trail and Parkway out of voter approved Proposition 84, in which TWC was a sponsor and played a major role in its passage. The missing links of the Santa Ana Trail and Parkway are scheduled to be completed by 2012.
